Who put that parked car in the road?

Print page

After heading out on my morning jog a few days ago, I was lost in my running world, (as you tend to do when you’ve got a lot on your mind) and while jogging on the pavement, I was certain that I had ducked down far enough to miss the corner of a very sharp edged street sign, alas, this was not the case.

I caught my head on the corner of the street sign and while it felt like I had split my head in two, I continued my run, wincing in pain. While I find it amusing now, it definitely wasn’t the case that morning and after that run, I found myself giggling about an incident many years back when I was still a young and inexperienced runner.

One of my cousins who I would occasionally run with, provided me with some much needed knowledge about the art of running uphill: If you’re really battling, put your head down, watch the road and before you know it, you’ll be at the top of the hill. Fascinating! I would definitely make use of this.

One evening while out on the local time trial route, there was, at that stage to me, a monster hill and my dad and I were running up the hill, with my dad eventually pulling ahead of me. My cousin’s words rang in my head and I thought I would give it a bash.

With my eyes fixed on my shoes as I trudged up the hill, I thought that this was the greatest advice and I was amazed at how well it seemed to be working… until… WHAM… What?

A car… parked… on the side of the road… not moving… who would do such a thing? I ran straight into/on to the bonnet of a parked car in the street!

My dad had made it to the top of the hill and had since come back down to encourage me. Well, more like peel me off the bonnet of the car! I was devastated and so embarrassed!

Needless to say, my dad carried me for the rest of the way up the hill (I was probably about 9 or 10 years old) until I had pulled myself together – just in time for the downhill! (Thanks again Dad!)

I was later advised that you should cast your eyes a few metres ahead of you, not right down at your feet.
This technique does work and I’ll more than likely be making use of this come 29 May 2011 as I conquer the “Big Five”! At least I’m sure there won’t be SURPRISE vehicles parked in the road!

That is very big of you to publish this story, especially on such a public forum.

I’m sure I’m not the only one to have done such silly things on a run, there must be hundreds of stories like this.
